VINTAGE VIEW will be at Rikketik on November 15 — come say hi! 👋
A French Space Age design icon! Meet the RB 33-B, an unusual spherical loudspeaker by French audio manufacturer Bouyer. An imposing sphere that was actually designed to make some noise!
During the 1960s and 1970s, futuristic shapes weren't just reserved for expensive designer furniture. Even practical equipment found in airports, train stations and other public spaces received a dose of Space Age styling.
And this is a fantastic Space Age example! Featuring a spherical beige-coloured housing with a perforated speaker grille underneath. Originally designed to hang from the ceiling, the RB 33-D was part of Bouyer's range of professional sound equipment, bringing announcements and background music to public spaces.
But forget boring grey speaker boxes! With its beige finish and almost planetary appearance, this French creation looks more like something from a science fiction movie than a piece of professional audio equipment.
A wonderful piece of vintage industrial design that deserves a second life, whether as a decorative Space Age object or as part of a vintage audio installation. Hang it from the ceiling as a standalone speaker or simply let it rest casually in a cool spot. Either way, this sound sphere is bound to get some attention!
Condition: Worn vintage condition with significant signs of age and use. The cream-coloured housing shows heavy discolouration, with dents, scratches and scuffs throughout. Speaker works!
Dimensions (H × W × D): 26 × 26 × 26 cm
Brand: Bouyer
Model: RB 33-B
Era: 1970s
Material: Plastic and metal
