VINTAGE VIEW will be at Rikketik on November 15 — come say hi! 👋
Copper, glass and a little bit of fire!
Meet this extraordinary pendant lamp attributed to German lighting manufacturer Peill+Putzler, a wonderful example of experimental lighting design from the 1960s and 1970s.
During this period, designers were fascinated by unconventional materials, textures and manufacturing techniques, creating lamps that were just as interesting switched off as they were illuminated. And this one is a fantastic example!
Featuring a cylindrical copper body with little amber-coloured glass bubbles emerging through its surface. But perhaps the most fascinating detail is the way this lamp was made! Using a technique known as caged glass, molten glass was blown into a copper shell, creating the distinctive glass bubbles protruding through its openings.
And just look at those colours! The heat-patinated copper displays beautiful variations in colour, ranging from warm copper and bronze tones to darker, almost iridescent shades. Giving the lamp a wonderfully organic, almost volcanic appearance.
The combination of delicate glass and rugged copper makes this a rather unusual piece of vintage lighting. Almost like a little piece of sculpture hanging from your ceiling!
Condition: Good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use.
Dimensions (H × W × D): 24 × 12 × 12 cm
Manufacturer: Peill+Putzler
Brand: Philips (possibly)
Model: NPD 133
Era: 1970s
Material: Amber glass and heat-patinated copper
