Yet another Alpina on the website… I hope I’m not becoming a one-trick pony, but… have you seen this watch? Goddamn!
First off, for those not familiar with the brand. Alpina really boomed during the 1930s and 1940s, producing watches that embraced just about every innovation of the era. Waterproof cases, chronographs, doctor's watches and dress watches. You name it, Alpina made it but with high quality standards!
A few things stand out with this particular piece. First, the case. A stainless steel screw-back case with some incredibly elegant lugs. Combining the elegance of a dress watch with the sturdy, waterproof construction you'd expect from a sports watch. And all of that in the 1940s!
But perhaps the thing that really takes the cake is everything underneath that crystal. Those long, elegant hands, sitting on top of an almost flawless dial with tiny golden nipple hour markers. The proportions, the details, the simplicity. To me, this is some of the very best stuff you can find in vintage watch collecting.
Inside sits the manually wound Alpina calibre 592. The movement has not been serviced, although this can be arranged upon request.
The watch shows signs of use throughout, as you'd expect from an 80-year-old timepiece. But the case retains its original definition and brushed finishing, something that's becoming increasingly difficult to find on watches of this age. And just take another look… That's exactly why I keep coming back to Alpina!
