Ole Mathiesen Classic "Peseux 7040"

€275.00

Ole Mathiesen, Copenhagen. A name I read, but one that didn't ring any bells and for someone obsessed with niche brands, that’s saying something. But, the classic charm and surprising quality at this price point convinced me to take a chance on buying this watch.

And as always, when you buy something you know nothing about… you start digging.

It all began in 1845, when Danish watchmakers Carl Matthæi and J.P. Christensen opened their workshop in Copenhagen. Matthæi eventually became royal watchmaker to King Frederik VII. In 1919, Axel O. Mathiesen took over, opening the door to retail high-end Swiss brands. His son Ole entered the scene in the 1950s, having been trained at Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin, and later partnered with big names like Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.

In 1962, Ole created his own watch: the 1962 Classic — a perfect blend of Scandinavian minimalism and Swiss precision. It offered a quiet, elegant alternative to Swiss icons like IWC. Over the decades, the brand became a beacon of Danish refinement, crowned in 2008 with the Royal Warrant as official supplier to the Danish Court.

Now, onto this particular piece. It instantly reminded me of a vintage IWC — classic, understated 1970s thin elegance. But can it hold its own in terms of quality? At this price point: absolutely. The Swiss-made case is solid and refined, housing the reliable Peseux 7040 — a thin, manual-wind workhorse that keeps the profile slim and the design sleek.

The watch itself is in very honest condition: subtle signs of wear that tell a story, but the details remain sharp. Recently serviced and ready for a wrist that values the beauty of something just a little off the beaten path.
