Omega’s vision of 1970s high-end time-only
The C-shape Constellation. I’ve always liked this case design because it is so unmistakably 1970s. And Omega played a big part in defining that look.
Moving away from the more traditional watch case with separate lugs, Omega gave its flagship high-end Constellation this bold, integrated C-shape. It was a very modern approach at the time, and throughout the following decade you see variations of this shape appearing across allmost all brands in the watch industry.
But it’s not just the shape that makes this case interesting. The finishing really brings it to life. Around the dial you’ll find a strong radial sunburst finish, contrasted by polished bevels along the sides. On the wrist, these different surfaces play beautifully with the light.
Paired with the sunburst dial, this is definitely a watch that deserves to be worn outside. Another detail I particularly like are the hour markers with their small black onyx inlays. Not simply painted black details, but actual stone, giving the black a much sharper and richer appearance.
The watch has been worn, but remains in outstanding condition. The case still shows its original contours and finishing, while the Constellation medallion on the caseback remains really well preserved.
Also cool, it comes with its original guarantee papers. The watch was sold on October 6, 1973 by Juwelier Helldorfer in Arnhem, giving this Constellation a little extra history to fantasize about.
